The Fundamentals

Carving out moments for dedicated meditation can play a pivotal role in setting up a routine and getting comfy with the practice. Even a few minutes daily can yield profound shifts.

"Some folks grumble about investing time from their already busy days," comments Atman Smith, a meditation mentor in Baltimore's underserved regions. "However, maintaining regular practice is crucial. It serves as a helpful instrument to ground you in the present during tension-filled situations."

Yet, our mindfulness shouldn't halt when we cease meditating. "The core aim of mindfulness meditation is to embed mindfulness in all life facets, thereby ensuring we're alert, present, and heart-opened in everything we undertake," points out Tara Brach, a beloved meditation guide near Washington, D.C. "This applies not only when we're comfortably seated on the cushion."

Mindfulness meditation doesn't mean allowing your thoughts to stray aimlessly. It's also not about striving to void your mind. It primarily involves closely observing the current moment — focusing on our thoughts, emotions, and sensations — whatever is unfolding in the now.

We've also gathered guided morning meditations for popular exercises, including the body scan, walking meditation, and mindful eating. "Each applied mindfulness practice helps to invigorate an experience that may otherwise be more autopilot," Brach adds.

Although solo meditation is an integral part of a holistic practice, the consistent guidance of a seasoned teacher can be incredibly beneficial, especially for beginners. Our minds can easily wander, and a teacher's clear instructions can be a beacon, guiding us back to the present moment.

It's an unavoidable part of any morning meditation routine: your mind will inevitably wander. You might find yourself consumed by sensations in your body, distracted by environmental happenings, or caught in a web of thoughts, drifting into past or future scenarios. You might even find yourself judging yourself or others.

This is completely normal, thinking is as innate as breathing. "Our minds are naturally conditioned to roam," says Ms. Brach.

When you notice your mind wandering during your morning calmness meditation or any morning mindfulness session, just take a moment to acknowledge it. Don't rush to yank your attention back to the meditation for positive energy. Rather, let go of the thought, reopen your attention, then slowly guide your awareness back to your breath. Remain present with each inhalation and exhalation.

"Don't hastily pull your mind back to the breath," advises Ms. Brach, "instead, reopen the attention, then gently come back and settle down again."

Sure enough, after a few breaths, the mind will likely meander again. Don't be harsh on yourself. It's natural and a part of the meditation for beginners' experience. The crucial part is how we respond when it happens. Acknowledge the thought without assigning too much judgment, take a moment to come back to the present, and continue your daily morning meditation.

"The skill we're cultivating lies in the act of returning," Ms. Brach highlights. "Returning, over and over again. Recognize it – thinking – then pause, and come back to the present moment." This is the essence of the morning meditation techniques, morning affirmation meditations, and guided morning meditations that foster morning mindfulness.

The Body Scan

In contrast to focusing on the breath, which is often the focus of many morning meditations, the body scan is a type of morning grounding meditation that systematically emphasizes different sensations and regions, from the crown of your head to the tips of your toes.

Begin at the apex of your head. Slowly and with intention, shift your attention to the surface of your skin, inch by inch. Attempt to feel your scalp, your ears, your eyelids, and your nose. Proceed like this, sweeping across your face, past your ears, descending down your neck and shoulders, and continuing all the way down to your toes.

Initially, it might appear as though you feel nothing. But as you advance in this guided morning meditation, you might start discovering a universe of new sensations. Some of the sensations might be pleasant - a soothing warmth, a comforting heaviness. Some sensations might be neutral - a tingling or an itch. And some might be unpleasant. Perhaps your feet might perceive a certain discomfort.

Whatever the sensation, just observe it. If you need to shift to alleviate real discomfort, do so. But try not to react or label the experience as good or bad - even if it's unpleasant. Instead, just recognize what you're feeling, and proceed with your morning calmness meditation. And of course, if you notice your mind has wandered during this meditation for focus, simply acknowledge the thought, and redirect your attention back to the body.
